Released in 1971 as one of ECM's earliest catalog entries, "Afric Pepperbird" captures the Jan Garbarek Quartet at their most raw and exploratory. The young Norwegian saxophonist leads a fiery ensemble featuring Terje Rypdal on guitar, Arild Andersen on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums - a lineup that would go on to define the sound of European jazz. This is Garbarek before the spacious minimalism of his later work: urgent, intense, and deeply rooted in free jazz energy. Highlight tracks include the title track and "Blow Away Zone".
