Charles Mingus stands as one of the most visionary and uncompromising figures in jazz history — a bassist, composer, and bandleader whose music bridged bebop, hard bop, and the avant-garde with extraordinary emotional force. The Town Hall Concert, originally recorded live in New York, captures Mingus and his ensemble in full flight: ambitious extended compositions, raw collective improvisation, and that unmistakable Mingus intensity. This German Bellaphon reissue from 1971 is an excellent way to own a key document of post-bop jazz in fine condition.
