Released in 1956, Pithecanthropus Erectus is a landmark in jazz history — Mingus's first fully realized large-scale composition for his Jazz Workshop. The title suite is a four-movement tone poem depicting the rise and fall of early man, featuring Jackie McLean and J.R. Monterose on saxophones in some of the most ferocious and free-spirited playing of the era. A cornerstone of Hard Bop and a direct precursor to the avant-garde.
