Miles Davis – Early Miles is a compilation of early Prestige recordings by Miles Davis, here as a 1972 German Bellaphon edition in the Prestige Historical Series (cat. no. BJS 40161). Side A comes from the sextet session of January 17, 1951 at Apex Studios in New York with Sonny Rollins, Bennie Green and John Lewis, including two takes of “Blue Room”. Side B is from the session of February 19, 1953 at Beltone Studios with tenor saxophonists Al Cohn and Zoot Sims; Al Cohn wrote all four pieces on this side. In content it matches the Prestige album “Miles Davis And Horns” (PRLP 7025, 1956), with the additional take of “Blue Room”. This copy is the 1972 German pressing.

No, it is a compilation of two sessions from 1951 and 1953, also released by Prestige on the album “Miles Davis And Horns”. This German edition came out in 1972 in the Prestige Historical Series.

Why is “Blue Room” on it twice?
The record includes two takes of “Blue Room” from the session of January 17, 1951, so you can hear how the sextet approached the same piece in different ways.
