Description

Albert Ayler – Nuits De La Fondation Maeght Volume 1 is a concert recording by tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler, made in July 1970 at the "Nuits de la Fondation Maeght" in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on the French Riviera and released in 1970 on the French label Shandar (cat. no. SR 10 000). It is among Ayler's last recordings; he died in November 1970. With Call Cobbs on piano, Steve Tintweiss on bass and Allen Blairman on drums, he plays his own pieces such as "Spirits", "Holy Family" and "Spirits Rejoice", where hymn-like melodies and free improvisation sit side by side. This copy is a French Shandar reissue in a fully laminated gatefold sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The first edition came out in 1970 on Shandar with the same catalogue number SR 10 000. This copy is a later French reissue in a laminated gatefold sleeve.

When exactly was the concert recorded?
Ayler played two nights at the Fondation Maeght in July 1970. Reported recording dates differ: both July 25 and July 27, 1970 are given. The remaining pieces from the concerts appeared on "Volume 2".

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new with at most minimal signs of play. VG+ (Very Good Plus) on the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Albert Ayler records?
Yes, for example Albert Ayler – Witches & Devils. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
