The self-titled debut by Dire Straits arrived in 1978 as one of the most assured first albums in rock history. Recorded on a shoestring budget, it introduced Mark Knopfler's unmistakable fingerpicked guitar style and his gift for cinematic storytelling. Highlights include the timeless "Sultans of Swing", the brooding "Down to the Waterline", and the atmospheric "Water of Love" - tracks that still sound as fresh today as they did on release.
