Originally recorded in 1957, the meeting of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane stands as one of the most celebrated encounters in jazz history — two towering geniuses at a pivotal moment in their respective careers. Monk’s angular, idiosyncratic harmonic language proved the perfect crucible for Coltrane’s rapidly evolving tenor voice, and the results are nothing short of extraordinary. This 1982 Original Jazz Classics reissue on OJC-039 brings this essential recording to a new generation of listeners in excellent condition.
