Description

Alexander von Schlippenbach – Globe Unity is the first recording of the large ensemble of the same name, which Schlippenbach put together in 1966 on a commission from the Berlin Jazz Festival and which later became the Globe Unity Orchestra. The album was recorded on December 6 and 7, 1966 at Ariola Studio in Cologne, produced by Joachim-Ernst Berendt, and released by SABA in 1967. The line-up includes Peter Brötzmann, Manfred Schoof, Gunter Hampel, Peter Kowald and Jaki Liebezeit – it was the first LP for Brötzmann and Kowald. This copy is the 1967 German original pressing in a gatefold sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
Yes. Globe Unity was released in Germany by SABA in 1967, catalogue number SB 15109. This copy is a pressing from that year in a gatefold sleeve; later editions appeared on MPS.

What makes this recording special?
It is regarded as one of the first big-band recordings of European free jazz. Two bassists and two drummers are split left and right in the stereo image, among them Jaki Liebezeit, who co-founded Can shortly afterwards.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new; there is a tiny sticker on the label. VG+ (Very Good Plus) means the sleeve shows light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Alexander von Schlippenbach records?
Not at the moment. More titles are in our Jazz and Experimental collections.
