Description

Coleman Hawkins – Desafinado (full title: Coleman Hawkins Plays Bossa Nova & Jazz Samba) is an album by tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins on Impulse! (cat. no. AS-28). It was recorded on September 12 and 17, 1962 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, produced by Bob Thiele with arrangements by Manny Albam, and first released in the US later in 1962. Hawkins took up the bossa nova wave that was sweeping American jazz at the time, recording without piano but with two guitars, bass, drums and percussion. This copy is a German pressing, a limited edition in a gatefold sleeve with the original label inner sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No, the first edition was released in the US in 1962. This copy is a German pressing, marked as a limited edition on the sleeve, in the typical Impulse! gatefold. These German limited-edition issues of AS-28 were produced later as reissues; our listing does not state a pressing year.

Which tracks come from Brazil?
Desafinado and One Note Samba were written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Newton Mendonça, O Pato by Jayme Silva and Neuza Teixeira, Um Abraço No Bonfá by João Gilberto. Add two American standards played as bossa nova, plus one tune each by Manny Albam and Hawkins himself.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new with at most minimal signs of play. VG+ (Very Good Plus) means the sleeve shows light wear, here some general wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Coleman Hawkins records?
Yes, for example The Essen Jazz Festival All Stars with Bud Powell, Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke, and another copy of Desafinado. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
