Description

Deodato – Prelude is the CTI debut of Brazilian pianist and arranger Eumir Deodato (cat. no. CTI 6021), released in January 1973. It was recorded in September 1972 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, produced by Creed Taylor and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. The album became known for Deodato's funky version of Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra", which became an international hit, alongside Debussy's "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun" and his own pieces. The band includes Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Airto, John Tropea and Hubert Laws, among others. This copy is a German pressing, dated 1986 in our listing, in a gatefold sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The album was first released in the US in January 1973. This copy is a later German pressing with the same catalogue number CTI 6021 in a gatefold sleeve.

What is the best-known track?
"Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)": Deodato's jazz-funk treatment of the Strauss theme made famous by Stanley Kubrick's film 2001. The edited single became a hit.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) for the record means close to new with at most minimal signs of use. VG+ (Very Good Plus) for the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Deodato records?
Yes, for example Deodato – 2001 Also Sprach Zarathustra (Deodato Vol. 1 / Vol. 2). More CTI records such as Jim Hall – Concierto are in our Jazz collection.
