Description
The Quintet – Jazz At Massey Hall documents the concert of May 15, 1953 at Massey Hall in Toronto, the only time Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach performed together as a quintet. It was also the last recorded meeting of Parker and Gillespie. The recordings were released in 1953 on Mingus's own Debut label, where Parker was billed as "Charlie Chan" for contractual reasons. Mingus and Roach later overdubbed the under-recorded bass lines in New York. This copy is the 1983 US reissue in the Original Jazz Classics series (OJC-044, mono).

FAQ
Who is "Charlie Chan"?
That is Charlie Parker. He was under contract to another label and could not be named on the cover. The pseudonym refers to the fictional detective Charlie Chan and to Parker's wife Chan.
Is this the original pressing?
No. The original issues came out on Debut from 1953, first as 10-inch records. This copy is the 1983 US reissue in the Original Jazz Classics series with all six quintet tracks.
What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) for the record means close to new with at most minimal signs of use. VG+ (Very Good Plus) for the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.
Do you have more records by these musicians?
Yes, for example Bud Powell – Hot House, Charles Mingus – Town Hall Concert or The Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band – 20th And 30th Anniversary. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
