Description

Roland Kirk – Funk Underneath is a retitled reissue of the Prestige album Kirk's Work (PRLP 7210), with Jack McDuff co-credited on the cover. The session was recorded on July 11, 1961 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, supervised by Esmond Edwards with Rudy Van Gelder as engineer. Kirk plays tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch and flute, sometimes simultaneously, against Jack McDuff's Hammond organ. This copy is a 1967 German stereo pressing (Prestige PR 7450 / SABA PRST 7450).

FAQ

Is Funk Underneath a separate album?
No. It contains the same music as Kirk's Work (Prestige 7210, 1961). Prestige later reissued it under the name of the third track and added Jack McDuff to the cover credit.

Is this the original pressing?
No. This is a 1967 German stereo edition distributed by SABA. The recordings were first issued in the US in 1961.

What does Media VG+ / Cover VG+ mean?
VG+ (Very Good Plus) means the record shows light signs of play but plays cleanly. The sleeve also has some wear and a small tear on the back. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Roland Kirk records?
Yes, for example Rahsaan Roland Kirk – Bright Moments, Roland Kirk – Kirk In Copenhagen or The Return Of The 5000 Lb. Man. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
