Description

Bob James – One is the first CTI album by keyboardist and arranger Bob James (cat. no. CTI 6043), released in 1974. It was recorded between February and April 1974 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, produced by Creed Taylor and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder. Besides his own pieces, James arranges Mussorgsky's "Night On Bald Mountain", Pachelbel's Canon ("In The Garden") and Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Making Love"; soloists include Grover Washington, Jr. on soprano saxophone. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard jazz chart. "Nautilus" later became a widely sampled track in hip-hop. This copy is a German pressing in a gatefold sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The first edition was released in the US in 1974. This is a German pressing with the same catalogue number CTI 6043.

Why is "Nautilus" so well known?
From the late 1980s onwards the track was sampled widely in hip-hop, which made it familiar to listeners beyond jazz.

What does Media NM- to VG+ / Cover VG+ mean?
The record sits between NM- (Near Mint minus, close to new with at most minimal marks) and VG+ (Very Good Plus, light signs of use that hardly affect playback). VG+ for the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Bob James records?
Yes, for example Bob James – Three and Bob James – Touchdown. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
