FAQ

Which techno classics should you own on vinyl?
Among the most important are Phuture "Acid Tracks", Underground Resistance "Your Time Is Up", Basic Channel "Lyot Rmx", Speedy J "Ginger" and Jeff Mills "The Bells". Our top 10 with background and pressing tips is in the guide Techno & House on Vinyl.

What is Detroit techno?
Techno was invented in Detroit in the mid-80s by Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. They combined Kraftwerk's synthesizer sound with funk to create cool, futuristic club music. From 1990, Underground Resistance and Jeff Mills shaped the harder, more political second generation.

What is the difference between house and techno?
House comes from Chicago, has its roots in disco and soul and sounds warmer, often with vocals. Techno comes from Detroit and sounds cooler and more machine-like, with fewer vocals and more repetition. The lines are blurred, and many records sit right in between.

What is the difference between techno and trance?
Techno is driven mainly by rhythm and repetition and needs little melody. Trance relies on melodies, wide synthesizer pads and long breakdowns that build tension, which usually makes it sound more euphoric.

Why is techno mostly released on 12″?
The tracks are released mainly for DJs. On a 12″ the grooves have more room, which allows a louder level and more bass, ideal for the club.

How do you grade the condition?
Every used record is checked by hand and graded to the Goldmine standard, with vinyl (media) and sleeve graded separately. The images are our own scans, so you get exactly the copy shown. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.
