Techno & House on Vinyl: 10 Classics from Chicago to Detroit

For us, the most important techno and house classics on vinyl are: Phuture "Acid Tracks", Inner City "Good Life", A Guy Called Gerald "Voodoo Ray", Underground Resistance "Your Time Is Up", Age Of Love "The Age Of Love", Speedy J "Ginger", Basic Channel "Lyot Rmx", Daft Punk "Homework", Moodymann "Amerika" and Jeff Mills "The Bells". They were made between 1987 and 1997, the decade in which house was invented in Chicago and techno in Detroit, before both spread around the world via Manchester, Rotterdam, Berlin and Paris. Almost all of them first came out as 12" maxi singles for DJs, and that is still where they sound best.

Chicago house and Detroit techno: how did it all start?

House was born in Chicago in the early 80s. DJs such as Frankie Knuckles at The Warehouse, the club that gave the music its name, and Ron Hardy at the Music Box played disco, soul and European synthesizer music and extended the tracks with drum machines. Soon young musicians were producing their own tracks on the Roland TR-808 and TR-909, and labels such as Trax Records and DJ International pressed them on vinyl.

At almost the same time, three school friends from Belleville near Detroit invented techno: Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. They listened to Kraftwerk as much as to funk and turned it into cool, futuristic music about the city of car factories. Atkins had already shaped Detroit electro with Cybotron in the early 80s; as Model 500 he went on to lay the foundations of techno.

From 1988 the spark jumped to Europe: in the UK, acid house became a youth movement, and after the fall of the Wall, Berlin, with clubs like Tresor, became the second home of Detroit techno. The link between Detroit and Berlin is still strong today.

Which techno and house records should you know? Our top 10

1. Phuture: Acid Tracks (1987)

The track that gave a whole genre its name. DJ Pierre, Earl "Spanky" Smith and Herb J twisted the knobs of a Roland TB-303, a machine originally meant as a bass accompaniment, and coaxed out the squelchy, bubbling sound that has been called "acid" ever since. Ron Hardy played it at the Music Box again and again until the crowd loved it. Without "Acid Tracks" there would be no acid house and no large parts of later techno.

For whom: anyone who wants to understand where the typical acid sound comes from.

2. Inner City: Good Life (1988)

Kevin Saunderson, one of the three techno founders from Belleville, brought singer Paris Grey into the studio and proved that Detroit could do hits too. "Good Life" combines a driving beat with soulful vocals and big synthesizer pads and became a top 10 hit in the UK. It still gets played at every house party today.

For whom: anyone who likes house with vocals and feeling. In our shop as a European 12" from 1988. Kenny Larkin later reworked the song: "Smile / Life" on KMS.

3. A Guy Called Gerald: Voodoo Ray (1988)

Gerald Simpson from Manchester built one of the first British acid house classics with little money and lots of imagination. "Voodoo Ray", with its warped vocal snippet, became the anthem of the "Second Summer Of Love" and was played constantly at the Haçienda. Shortly before, Simpson had been working with 808 State.

For whom: anyone who wants to discover acid house from the British side. In our shop as "The Peel Sessions", recorded in October 1988 for John Peel's radio show.

4. Underground Resistance: Your Time Is Up (1990)

This record launched one of the most important collectives in techno history. Mike "Mad Mike" Banks and Jeff Mills founded Underground Resistance as a response to the music industry: independent, political and with no faces on the covers. The first release, UR001, pairs big synthesizer chords with the voice of Yolanda Reynolds and sits right between Detroit house and techno.

For whom: collectors who want to own a real piece of Detroit. From the UR family we also have The Martian "Meet The Red Planet" and "Aztlan" by Mad Mike and DJ Rolando.

5. Age Of Love: The Age Of Love (1990)

Bruno Sanchioni and Giuseppe Chierchia released the track in 1990 on the Belgian label DiKi Records. It became truly famous two years later through the "Watch Out For Stella Mix" by Jam & Spoon from Frankfurt, which is considered one of the cornerstones of trance. The hypnotic bassline and the breathy voice still work on any big dance floor today.

For whom: anyone who wants to hear the transition from techno to trance. In our shop as a 12" EP with three remixes (2025).

6. Speedy J: Ginger (1993)

With its "Artificial Intelligence" series, the British label Warp showed in the early 90s that techno also works for listening. Rotterdam's Jochem Paap, aka Speedy J, contributed his debut "Ginger" to the series: minimal 4/4 beats with lots of space, warm pads and short interludes. A record for an evening on the sofa as much as for the early morning in the club.

For whom: anyone who prefers techno on headphones. From the same series we also have B12 "Electro-Soma" as a UK original.

7. Basic Channel: Lyot Rmx (1993)

Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus, from the circle around the Berlin record shop Hard Wax, brought Detroit and Jamaica together: echo, reverb and deep bass from dub, combined with endlessly circling techno loops. That is how dub techno was born. Typical of the label are the plain labels that often just say "Basic Channel", with no titles or running times.

For whom: anyone who likes deep, hypnotic sound. In our shop as a 12" from Berlin.

8. Daft Punk: Homework (1997)

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo recorded their debut entirely by themselves in Paris and mixed Chicago house, funk and disco into something new that soon became known as French house. "Da Funk" and "Around The World" became worldwide hits, and "Revolution 909" is a nod to the Roland drum machine without which this music would not exist.

For whom: anyone discovering house on vinyl for the first time. In our shop as a 2LP reissue and as "Homework (Remixes)".

9. Moodymann: Amerika (1997)

Kenny Dixon Jr., aka Moodymann, stands for the soulful, slow side of Detroit. On his own label KDJ he released records that sound like jazz, funk and gospel, often with no titles on the labels. "Amerika" (KDJ 15) builds its dragging groove from samples of Idris Muhammad and Gil Scott-Heron. Deep house that sounds more like a smoky bar than a mega club.

For whom: anyone who likes it warm, slow and deep.

10. Jeff Mills: The Bells (1997)

"The Bells" regularly lands at the top of DJs' and fans' lists of the best techno tracks of all time. Jeff Mills, co-founder of Underground Resistance, released it on his label Purpose Maker: a pounding beat topped by a bell melody that burns itself into your memory. Mills is famous for his lightning-fast sets on three turntables and a Roland TR-909.

For whom: anyone looking for the one track that stands for techno. From Jeff Mills we currently have "Three Ages", his soundtrack to Buster Keaton's silent film.

Also great, just not in the top 10: Rhythim Is Rhythim "Strings Of Life", Model 500 "No UFO's", Joey Beltram "Energy Flash", Plastikman "Spastik", DJ Rolando "Knights Of The Jaguar", Chez Damier "I Never Knew Love", Fast Eddie "Jack To The Sound", the compilation "Chicago Trax Volume 1", Juan Atkins "Futurepast EP", Laurent Garnier "Unreasonable Behaviour" with "The Man With The Red Face", and from Cologne Wassermann "W.I.R." by Wolfgang Voigt.

Original or reissue: which techno and house pressing is worth it?

Techno and house are DJ music, and you can tell from the records. Most classics were not released as albums but as 12" maxi singles in small runs. Our rules of thumb:

  • Check the speed: many maxis play at 45 instead of 33 rpm. More space per track means more volume and more bass, ideal for the club.
  • Look for DJ wear: used maxis were often played out. Typical signs are light wear at the start of tracks, where the needle was dropped again and again, and stickers on the label. That is why we grade record and sleeve separately to the Goldmine standard.
  • Originals have character: early Chicago pressings often sound rougher because labels like Trax pressed on cheap vinyl. Detroit labels such as Underground Resistance, on the other hand, liked to etch messages into the run-out groove, a nice detail for collectors.
  • Reissues are no flaw: many classics have been remastered and cleanly repressed. For listening and DJing they are often a better choice than a worn original.

FAQ: techno and house on vinyl

What is the difference between house and techno?

House comes from Chicago and has its roots in disco and soul: warm, often with vocals, usually around 120 to 125 BPM. Techno comes from Detroit and sounds cooler and more machine-like, with fewer vocals, more repetition and usually slightly faster beats. The lines are blurred, and many records sit right in between.

What is acid house?

Acid house is a style of house built on the squelchy, bubbling sound of the Roland TB-303. It started with Phuture's "Acid Tracks" in Chicago in 1987, and from 1988 acid house became a huge youth movement in the UK.

What is the most famous techno track?

Jeff Mills "The Bells" (1997) regularly lands at the top of best-of lists. Also frequently named are Rhythim Is Rhythim "Strings Of Life" (1987), Joey Beltram "Energy Flash" (1990) and Age Of Love "The Age Of Love" (1990).

Which city is the capital of techno?

Techno was invented in Detroit. After the fall of the Wall, Berlin, with clubs like Tresor and labels like Basic Channel, became its second home and is now seen by many as Europe's techno capital.

Why are house and techno mostly released on 12" maxi singles?

Because the music was made for DJs. A 12" holds only a few tracks, so the grooves can be wider. That gives more volume and bass, and the record is easier to mix in the club.

Which record should I start with?

For house, Daft Punk "Homework" is the easiest way in; for techno, Speedy J "Ginger". If you want a piece of history on your shelf straight away, go for Phuture "Acid Tracks" or Underground Resistance "Your Time Is Up".
