Description
Cecil Taylor – What's New is a live recording by pianist Cecil Taylor with Jimmy Lyons (alto saxophone) and Sunny Murray (drums), captured on November 23, 1962 at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. It comes from the same run of concerts as the album “Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come” and shows the trio moving into free jazz: next to two takes of “Nefertiti” and “Lena”, Taylor plays a free reading of the standard “What's New”. This copy is a UK edition on Alan Bates' Freedom label (FLP 40124), stereo.

FAQ
Is this the original pressing?
No. The 1962 recordings first appeared on the Danish Debut label. This is a later UK edition on Freedom, issued under the title “What's New”.
How does this relate to “Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come”?
Both albums come from the same November 1962 concerts at the Jazzhus Montmartre with Jimmy Lyons and Sunny Murray. “What's New” collects further takes and variations from those nights.
What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means close to new with at most minimal signs of use. VG+ (Very Good Plus) means light signs of use that barely affect playback or overall appearance. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.
