Description

Herbie Nichols – The Third World is a double LP from Blue Note's reissue series, released in Germany in 1975 (cat. no. BST 84 552 XCT). It contains 22 trio recordings by pianist and composer Herbie Nichols from 1955 and 1956, all made for Blue Note at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack; several pieces such as "Dance Line", "Blue Chopsticks", "Crisp Day" and "The Lady Sings the Blues" had not been released before. Al McKibbon, Teddy Kotick, Art Blakey and Max Roach play bass and drums. Nichols received little attention in his lifetime; his distinctive compositions were only discovered more widely later. This copy is the 1975 German edition in a gatefold sleeve.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
The recordings date from 1955/56 and were partly released at the time on the Blue Note albums "The Prophetic Herbie Nichols" and "Herbie Nichols Trio". This compilation came out in 1975; this copy is the German edition with catalogue number BST 84 552 XCT.

Did Herbie Nichols write "Lady Sings the Blues"?
Yes, the music is by Herbie Nichols. Billie Holiday wrote lyrics for it and recorded the song in 1956; here you hear Nichols' instrumental trio version.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) for the record means close to new with at most minimal signs of use. VG+ (Very Good Plus) for the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Herbie Nichols records?
