Hiltonaires – Big Bamboo is an album of mento and calypso songs by the Jamaican band The Hiltonaires (also spelled Hyltonaires), released on Hilary / Island Music Records (cat. no. ILP-1041). It was produced by Clifford Rae. Alongside the title track “Big Bamboo”, the band plays well-known Caribbean standards such as “Jamaica Farewell”, “Island In The Sun”, “Yellow Bird”, “Matilda” and “Shame And Scandal”. The album was also issued in Jamaica on WIRL and later on Coxsone Records. This copy is a Jamaican pressing on Hilary.

Is this ska?
Not really. Big Bamboo is a mento and calypso album. Mento is Jamaica's rural folk music that predates ska and reggae; many songs here are well-known Caribbean standards.
