Sapphire (1984) finds John Martyn in a more polished, production-conscious mode than his earlier raw masterworks - a mid-80s evolution that blends his signature folk, jazz and rock influences with a smoother, more radio-oriented sound without sacrificing the emotional depth and distinctive slurred vocal style that made him one of Britain's most original singer-songwriters. An essential album from his mid-career period and a fine addition to any John Martyn collection.
