Description

McCoy Tyner – Sama Layuca is a studio album by pianist McCoy Tyner, recorded March 26–28, 1974 and produced by Orrin Keepnews for Milestone; it was released in 1974. Tyner works with a large ensemble here: Gary Bartz and Azar Lawrence on saxophones, John Stubblefield on oboe and flute, Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone and marimba, Buster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume and Guilherme Franco on percussion. All five pieces are by Tyner, from the short "Above The Rainbow" to the 16-minute-plus "Paradox". The liner notes were written by organist Brian Auger. This copy is the 1974 German Bellaphon edition.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
It is the German first edition from the year of release, 1974. Bellaphon issued the Milestone recordings in Germany under licence at the time, and the label shows the Milestone design.

What is special about the line-up?
Tyner expands his quartet into a nonet with oboe, flute, two saxophones, vibraphone and two percussionists. This makes the pieces more colourful and rhythmically denser than on his quartet records.

What does Media VG+ / Cover VG+ mean?
VG+ (Very Good Plus) on the record means light signs of play or fine marks that are barely audible. VG+ (Very Good Plus) on the sleeve means light wear, here wear on corners and edges. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more McCoy Tyner records?
Yes, for example McCoy Tyner – Atlantis, McCoy Tyner – Enlightenment and McCoy Tyner – Expansions. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
