Description

Ranking Dread – Girls Fiesta is the debut album by Jamaican deejay Ranking Dread, released in 1978 on the London label Burning Sounds (cat. no. BS 1025). Ranking Dread grew up in Kingston’s Rema and Tivoli neighbourhoods, toasted for the Ray Symbolic sound system in the 1970s and later moved to London, where he worked with Lloyd Coxsone’s sound system. It was produced by Linval Thompson, recorded in Jamaica and remixed at Chalk Farm Studios in London. This copy is a 1978 UK original pressing on blue vinyl.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
Yes. It is the 1978 UK first edition on Burning Sounds (BS 1025), here in the blue vinyl variant. There is also a black vinyl edition; reissues only followed from 2014.

What is toasting?
Toasting is the rhythmic chanting of Jamaican deejays over riddims, a forerunner of rap. Ranking Dread was one of the deejays who brought the style into the British sound system scene.

What does Media VG+ / Cover VG mean?
Media VG+ means: light wear, with at most faint surface noise on playback. Cover VG means: clear signs of wear but complete and in decent shape, here spine wear and a bent corner. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Ranking Dread records?
This is currently our only Ranking Dread record. From the producer we have Linval Thompson – Follow My Heart (red vinyl, 1980). More titles are in our Reggae, Ska & Dub collection.
