Description

Sonny Rollins – Brass And Trio brings together two contrasting sessions by tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins from July 1958. Side A was recorded on July 11, 1958 at Metropolitan Studios in New York with a brass ensemble arranged by Ernie Wilkins; side B was cut the day before at Beltone Studios with a trio featuring Henry Grimes and Specs Wright, and Rollins plays Body And Soul entirely alone. The material first appeared in 1958 on MetroJazz as Sonny Rollins And The Big Brass and was later reissued by Verve as Brass And Trio. This copy is a 1974 Japanese Verve reissue without insert or OBI.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The material first came out in the US on MetroJazz in 1958. This copy is a 1974 Japanese Verve reissue, here without insert or OBI strip.

Why is the album called Brass And Trio?
The two sides show Rollins at two extremes: a large brass ensemble on one side, a piano-less trio and an unaccompanied Body And Soul on the other.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new with at most minimal signs of wear. VG+ (Very Good Plus) means the sleeve shows light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Sonny Rollins records?
Yes, for example Sonny Rollins – Moving Out, Sonny Rollins Trio – St. Thomas: In Stockholm 1959 and Dizzy Gillespie With Sonny Rollins And Sonny Stitt – Duets. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
