Description

The Lee Konitz Quartet – Tranquility is an album by alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, recorded on October 22, 1957 and released by Verve the same year (cat. no. MG V-8281). Konitz, a leading figure of cool jazz and a student of Lennie Tristano, plays here without a pianist, with guitarist Billy Bauer, bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Dave Bailey. Alongside standards such as Memories Of You and The Nearness Of You are Tristano's Lennie Bird, Bauer's Jonquil and Konitz's own Stephanie. This copy is a 1974 Japanese mono edition (cat. no. MV 2508), without OBI.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The album was first released by Verve in the US in 1957 (MG V-8281). This copy is a 1974 Japanese mono edition from the "Immortal Jazz On Verve" series, numbered MV 2508; the OBI is missing.

Why is there no pianist?
For this session Konitz chose a quartet with guitar instead of piano. Billy Bauer, like Konitz from Lennie Tristano's circle, provides the chordal accompaniment, which gives the album its light, calm sound.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) for the record means close to new with at most minimal signs of use. VG+ (Very Good Plus) for the sleeve means light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Lee Konitz records?
Yes, for example Lee Konitz – Chicago 'N All That Jazz, Lee Konitz – Satori. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
