Description

The Pogues – Rum Sodomy & The Lash is the London band’s second album, first released on 5 August 1985 on Stiff Records. It was produced by Elvis Costello at Elephant Studios in London and reached number 13 on the UK albums chart. Shane MacGowan originals such as “A Pair Of Brown Eyes” and “Sally MacLennane” sit alongside Ewan MacColl’s “Dirty Old Town”, Eric Bogle’s “And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” and traditional pieces. The sleeve puts the band into a version of Théodore Géricault’s painting “The Raft of the Medusa”. This copy is a 1988 German reissue on Upfront (cat. no. 6.26202 AP).

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
No. The original was released in 1985 on Stiff Records. This record is a 1988 German licensed edition on the Upfront label.

What was Elvis Costello’s role?
Costello was first hired to produce just two songs but ended up producing the whole album. His production is known for being raw and direct, close to the band’s live sound.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new with at most minimal signs of play. For the sleeve, VG+ means light wear such as edge wear or light ring wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Pogues records?
Yes, for example The Pogues – Red Roses For Me (DE reissue 1988), The Stiff Records B-Sides 1984–1987 and an Italian first pressing of Rum Sodomy & The Lash (IT original 1985). More in our Folk Rock collection.
