Description
Woody Shaw – Setting Standards is an album by trumpeter Woody Shaw on Muse Records (cat. no. MR 5318). It was recorded on December 1, 1983 at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, produced by Michael Cuscuna, with Rudy Van Gelder handling recording and mastering; the reported year of release varies between 1984 and 1985. As the title suggests, Shaw focuses mostly on standards such as "There Is No Greater Love", "All The Way" and "What's New", in a quartet with Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass and Victor Jones on drums. Shaw plays mostly flugelhorn, switching to trumpet on "Spiderman Blues" and "What's New". This copy is the 1985 French pressing.

FAQ
Is this the original pressing?
Muse was a US label and the first edition came out in the US. This copy is the French pressing with the same catalogue number MR 5318 from 1985, a contemporary licensed edition rather than a later reissue.
What does Media "VG+ and better" mean?
VG+ (Very Good Plus) on the record means light signs of play or fine marks that are barely audible. "And better" means parts of the record are above that grade. The sleeve is graded VG+, meaning light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.
Does Woody Shaw play trumpet or flugelhorn here?
Both: he plays flugelhorn on four tracks and trumpet on "Spiderman Blues" and "What's New". The flugelhorn gives the ballads a softer, rounder sound.
Do you have more Woody Shaw records?
Yes, for example Woody Shaw Quintet – Time Is Right – Live In Europe. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
