Description

The Carla Bley Band – I Hate To Sing is an album by composer and bandleader Carla Bley on her own WATT label (cat. no. WATT/12½), released in 1984. Side A was recorded live on August 19–21, 1981 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, side B on January 11–13, 1983 at Grog Kill Studio in Willow, New York. Produced by Carla Bley, engineered by Tom Mark. The title is meant literally: on several pieces the band members do the singing themselves, with plenty of irony. This copy is the 1984 German original pressing in a gatefold sleeve with insert.

FAQ

Is this the original pressing?
Yes, it is the 1984 German first edition on WATT with catalogue number WATT/12½, in a gatefold sleeve with insert.

Why is the album called "I Hate To Sing"?
On several pieces the band's instrumentalists take over the vocals, including drummer D. Sharpe on the title track. The album deliberately plays with that contradiction.

What does Media NM- / Cover VG+ mean?
NM- (Near Mint minus) means the record is close to new with at most minimal signs of play. VG+ (Very Good Plus) means the sleeve shows light wear. All grades are explained on our Vinyl Grading page.

Do you have more Carla Bley records?
Yes, for example Carla Bley – Live!, recorded at the same 1981 concerts, as well as Social Studies and Escalator Over The Hill. More titles are in our Jazz collection.
